Day in the Life of Lucaas Secrist '20

For me, every day can be different because of my different roles, but the two main schedules I follow are my Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule and my Tuesday and Thursday schedule. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are my early days that begin with an 8 a.m. class, which is a lot for me because mornings are the worst. I have classes back-to-back at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. as well as another class from 2:00-3:15 p.m. I also have either an executive board meeting or a Residence Life staff meeting on Mondays for lunch, and I play a game of poker with my friends every Monday night. I’m also on resident assistant duty from 9 p.m. to midnight on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Tuesdays and Thursdays I only have one class, so those are my student organization focused days. I wake up for my Student Ambassador shift at 10 a.m. and give tours or do other work in Admissions until 11:30 a.m. Afterwards, I grab a quick lunch before I go to the Student Life office to work on Student government items. I also have a meeting for our fraternity, Zeta Theta Theta, on Thursdays at lunch and I meet for Business Club on Tuesdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are also my homework days where I work on all of my homework from throughout the week.

I always make sure I schedule in free time to play video games and spend time with my friends because it is so easy to be overwhelmed and get burnt out. Another key part for me is developing a good network of people that I can trust and rely on for anything. Life is going to happen and things will fail, but if you have a good team you will always make it through stronger than before.

While attending Mac, I’ve found certain tips to be helpful: First, make friends with Barb. I know you don’t know who that is yet, but when you get here you will. Second, always make time for yourself and enjoy your time here. Go out with friends, spend some money on a nice dinner, pamper yourself every once in a while. Third, always know where the free items are. There may be free cookies or popcorn or shirts on certain days, and those will always be the best days. Lastly, always call home. That doesn’t mean go home every weekend, do the opposite of that. Stay on campus, get involved, immerse yourself here, I promise it will make college so much better. However, always try and call home once a week, just to chat and update your family with what you’re up to and to reaffirm your plans and path.
