MacMurray to perform “Godspell” using shadow interpreting

MacMurray College is set to present the musical, “Godspell,” on Feb. 28-29 at 7 p.m. and March 1 at 2 p.m. at the Marian Chase Schaeffer Theatre in the Jenkins Education Complex on the campus of MacMurray College.

“Godspell” is a musical depicting the life of Jesus and parables based on the Gospel of Matthew. The first act features parodies of the parables while the second act focuses on the life, temptation and death of Christ. The play is written by John-Michael Tebelak and music by Stephen Schwartz.

MacMurray’s production of “Godspell” will involve shadow interpreting. Usually ASL interpreters for theater are stationary, but in this production MacMurray student interpreters will be part of the cast. The interpreters will move around closely to the actors and be incorporated into the show.

“This show is a unique take on ‘Godspell,’” said Christine Smith, Director of Performing Arts. “Even for someone who has seen the musical, this will be a different version and a different experience. We invite the hard of hearing and deaf community to see the show.”
